Wi-Fi is a wireless connection that is
hosted by a
router,
modem, or other
Wi-Fi access point, that allows other devices to connect to it.
Routers and modems that support
Wi-Fi can be configured to enable
Wi-Fi.
Wi-Fi setup is simple, it usually has 2 basic sections...
SSID and Security
SSID:SSID is an acronym for Service Set Identification. Basically an
SSID is a
Wi-Fi network name, such as 'linksys' or 'actiontec'.
Security:Security is also known as
Encryption, and it is optional. Security is intended to keep unwanted devices off of the wireless network. In most cases, security is off by default.
Popular security methods are:
-
WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
-WPA (
Wi-Fi Protected Access)
-WPA2
Unfortunately
WEP has turned out to be much less secure than intended, so WPA is preferred to
WEP.
The methods listed above are based on passwords. If you choose to use a
password security method, remember that the password will be needed by
any device that connects to the
Wi-Fi network, so be sure to write down
the password!
Most routers and
modem manufacturers have their own methods of setting up
Wi-Fi on their devices, because of this it makes it very difficult for tech support to identify the method of setting up
Wi-Fi for these devices.
Wi-Fi is a feature of some modems/routers and is considered to be a
personal preference and therefore cannot be supported by Visionary directly.
This article, combined with the
modem/
router manual, should help you configure your
Wi-Fi.
Tip: If you're unable to locate the manual for the
modem/
router, it is most likely available at the manufacturers website.
